laser cut notebook paper, sewing thread, glass beads, laser cut letters from the artist’s community, stock images that remind the artist of home

The culmination of many ideas centering on connection, disconnection, and reconnection, this piece incorporated an interactive aspect. Viewers were invited to take one of the leaves from the pile on the floor “in remembrance of home.” The leaves on the floor were laser cut with the phrase “I miss you,” while the hanging leaves were laser cut with the phrase “When my leaves fall, will my roots still reach others?” This piece was shown in conjunction with the following poem:

You cannot stop thinking about the oak trees. You remember

climbing them and smelling the acridity of leaves.

The leaves, the leaves, falling as you fell from the swing and

bruised your body against the tree that caught you.

The leaves, the leaves, tiny and fuzzy in the nascence of spring.

The leaves, the leaves, crisp and crunchy under your feet.

You haven’t seen leaves like those in so long.

You yearn for the leaves.
